Ok I need to get this cab painted. I
asked around to find out what the finish might have been back in '33. Not one
definitive answer but by deduction I figured a semi-gloss. Why? Well because
peoples hands would be all over these games and I imagine operators would have
hated trying to keep a glossy game glossy. On the other hand a flat finish would
look horrid and ops wouldn't buy them so by reason of insanity... err, deduction
:) I figure semi-gloss.
Good ol' Rustoleum semi-gloss black. Not too shiny, not too dull :)
After sanding between coats... No more missing chunk!
The door looks nice! Now that the cabinet is done I need to make some legs. I took measurements from the legs I got with it and got the correct profile from Richard Conger's game. I then drew these out (thank goodness for drafting class in junior high!) and proceeded to hunt down some good hardwood. I actually lucked into some teak for free! Maple would have been my first choice but way too expensive. Once I had the wood I needed to make a couple jigs. One for tapering and one for milling.
Here's my simple but functional tapering jig. I also made oak V blocks
These hold the legs on the corner in my XY vise so I can drill the bolt holes and mill the backs
And there ya have it! Holes drilled for the leveler nuts
Some milling detail Pretty nice and so deco!
Some more sanding and then painting and we can start on the playfield!
